Royalty and magnificent views are a heady mix at The Lake House in Polonnaruwa | Pledge Holidays Travel Blog

ROYALTY AND MAGNIFICENT VIEWS ARE A HEADY MIX AT THE LAKE HOUSE IN POLONNARUWA Waking up in the king-sized bed once slept in by Queen Elizabeth II, with a view across a man-made lake to the ramparts of an ancient city once occupied by Sri Lankan royalty, is a heady experience. Lake House was the former Polonnaruwa Rest House before being transformed into an overnight sanctuary for the visit of Britain’s reigning monarch on her first Commonwealth tour since her coronation five months previously. Things were simpler back in 1954, and the Queen’s room, and the restaurant jutting out into the lake, were relatively simple affairs created especially for her. Comfortable, but not particularly lavish. But times change, and that former rest house has now been transformed into a rather more palatial luxury boutique hotel by its current owners, the Ceylon Hotels Corporation, managed by the Galle Face Hotels Group. OUR LADY OF MADHU—INSPIRATION, SOLACE AND REFUGE FROM THE TRIALS OF LIFE To a casual visitor, the Roman Catholic Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu in this north-western corner of Sri Lanka resembles a refugee camp. As indeed it once was, and in many ways still is. On feast days, particularly August 15, hardly a square meter of Madhu’s teeming tent city remains unoccupied as rich and poor gather to pray, give thanks for small mercies, and walk on their knees up the central isle of the 130-year-old church. Some pray for a miracle. Others seek fellowship and reconciliation after the trauma of the recent civil war. Meanwhile, a few look for a sign that now is the time to get off their knees and stand up for themselves. But for all of them – the tens of thousands who make their annual pilgrimages from all corners of this island paradise famed for tea, karma, and Buddhist monks – it is a welcome refuge from a material world often filled with bad news. Most have driven through the night to arrive at the roadside shrine 50 kilometres south-east of Mannar, with its imposing gateway to the final 12 kilometres of specially built B378 road that cuts arrow-straight through the jungle. THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF HELGA’S FOLLY, SRI LANKA’S WORLD-FAMOUS ARTISTIC BOUTIQUE HOTEL Helga’s Folly is one of the most astounding hotels in the world, never mind Sri Lanka—and it is a story of uncompromising eccentricity, tragedy, tears, and an indomitable will to survive. Helga de Silva Blow Perera, aged 72, daughter of His Excellency Edmond Frederick Lorenz De Silva, a celebrated Sri Lankan politician and the former Ceylon’s ambassador to France, is surely unique. As the UK’s Guardian newspaper writer Ariel Sophia Bardi reports, “for almost 30 years, Helga de Silva Blow Perera, the flamboyantly attired owner of Helga’s Folly, a 30-room boutique hotel overlooking the Sri Lankan city of Kandy, has covered the walls of her estate with frenetic and dreamlike murals. “In 1988, she began painting the hotel – at that time, run by her parents – after divorcing her second husband, and while still in recovery from the suicide of her first, British writer and historian Jonathan Blow."
