Blog digest: 'Love is easier with alcohol and boiled egg' | Pledge Holidays Travel Blog

Sri Lanka is known for coconut arrack, a spirit distilled from the fermented sap of the palm tree. But Jaffna is known for palmyrah palms, not coconut ones. *** If golden beaches, rising waves, misty mountains, mighty elephants, stealthy leopards, giant whales, a majestic past, lovely tea and warm smiles could sum up a country, it would be Sri Lanka. *** Compared to the huge network of Indian railways, Sri Lanka is more like a toy train, and all the more better because it’s less crowded, less strenuous and much shorter in distance. *** Sitting in a tea plantation mess hall on a ridge above the high hill station of Ella, Sri Lanka, last week, sipping a weak green tea for which I had paid the equivalent of 10 bucks, or about 20 times its value in the village 100 metres or so below, I was reminded of the words of the travel writer PicoIyer – this generation’s Paul Theroux – in his excellent essay, “Why We Travel”. *** We decided travel around Sri Lanka with public transports (and some tuk-tuk), rather than hiring a car and driver. We found out that car + driver hire cost about USD 50 a day, excluding accommodation (usually hotels or B&Bs have driver’s quarter but if this is not available, you’ll have to pay for the driver’s board as well). PLEDGE HOLIDAYS BIDS A FOND FAREWELL TO LONDON AND WTM FOR ANOTHER YEAR We bid a fond farewell to London and the World Travel Market (WTM) for another year with a spring in our step and a song in our heart! We had a terrific time meeting and greeting with many of our Online Travel Agency (OTA) colleagues, and beating the drum for our Paradise island, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean! We were particularly delighted to learn that Sri Lanka is still a top and flourishing holiday destination for our British friends who seek sun, sea and sand in the depths of their UK winter. And whether it’s for moonlight romance, our amazing cultural heritage, a verdant Hill Country still redolent with British colonial influences, our fabulous spicy cuisine or our ayurveda wellness treatments, all are most welcome! As, of course, are our friends from elsewhere in a world that gets smaller every year while holiday destination choices expand and grow as more and better opportunities arise for new travel experiences. Eco-tourism, wildlife and off-the-beaten-track itineraries are a rapidly becoming a driving force for Sri Lanka tourism, and Pledge Holidays is in the forefront! Our team of experts, with their unmatched knowledge and experience of all the diversity that Sri Lanka has to offer, may be the new kids on the block, but they work tirelessly to make sure that all our customers and guests have the holiday of a lifetime when they travel with us. #SriLanka #WTM #Tourism #EcoTourism #Wildlife

Sri Lanka focus on UK tourists underscored at WTM in London | Pledge Holidays Travel Blog

SRI LANKA FOCUS ON UK TOURISTS UNDERSCORED AT WTM IN LONDON In the run-up to this year’s World Travel Market (WTM) in London, Sri Lankan tourism minister John Amaratunga said that Britain will be the focus of a major ongoing tourism marketing and promotional campaign. He says on the ministry website: “I am delighted to learn that a total of 62 Sri Lankan companies are taking part in the WTM this year. This is the highest ever number of Sri Lankan participants recorded at any international travel show. This shows the confidence our tourism industry has in the UK market. “The United Kingdom has traditionally been one of Sri Lanka’s primary tourism markets. The UK ranks as the No. 1 European market for Sri Lanka tourism and one of the top three global markets for the country. The number of tourist arrivals from the UK which stood at 143,412 at the end of September this year, reflects a solid growth of 17% over the corresponding period last year.” For the full report, click bellow. #SriLanka #WTM #Tourism #UK #Britain

Is flourishing Sri Lanka tourism poised for a major leap forward? | Pledge Holidays Travel Blog

IS FLOURISHING SRI LANKA TOURISM POISED FOR A MAJOR LEAP FORWARD? A big boost for high-end tourism in Sri Lanka was promised in bullish statements by tourism minister John Amaratunga ahead of the inaugural Asia Hotel and Tourism Investment Conference (AHTIC) in Colombo. As reported on the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) website, he said that the tourism sector could grow by an average annual rate of 15 to 20 per cent over the next four to five years. “By 2020 it is predicted to be the island’s top foreign exchange earner.” He reportedly added that “our aim is high-end tourism”, and that “tourism development zones on state-owned land would be opened up for ownership and lease; infrastructure projects like new expressways and regional airports are planned, and he said the island’s integrity would be preserved by avoiding over-development”.
